Start with a bar code. End with a work of art.
It’s the renaissance of packaging. Every aisle in the store is stocked with gorgeous, eye-catching images and scintillating text. Even dependable products that your grandparents bought are polished up with a bold new look.
But there’s a visual dead space on every single product you buy. A desert of creativity: The barcode.
Barcodes have been widely used since the 1970s, when they were designed to communicate information cheaply and well. But if you’re not a machine, barcodes just take up space.
In Europe, the standard is the EAN, European Article Number. So this explains the competition name: EAN Revolution.
A barcode is a rectangular series of black-and-white numbers and lines. Visually, they’re one of the least interesting things in our brightly colored world.
Henkel wants you to launch a creative revolution with their EAN. Throw dullness out the window. Re-interpret the barcodes for Henkel’s detergents, and lead the Barcode Revolution.
Here are examples of how to be creative with a bar code.
Your Mission
Reinterpret the EAN. Choose one of Henkel’s products and create a visually striking barcode. This contest is based in Italy, with prizes available to Zooppers internationally.
Use Henkel's Laundry and Home Care Italian brands for this competition. There are four categories of Laundry and Home Care brands:
- Laundry (Dixan, General, BioPresto)
- Laundry softeners/delicates detergents (Vernel, Perlana)
- Dishwashing (Nelsen, Dixan Gel, Pril)
- Housekeeping (Bref)
You can find barcodes for all these products in the materials file.
Winners will be used on product packaging, advertising materials, web pages and other marketing materials.
Requirements
Your code must be readable by barcode scanners. Check the parameters in the downloadable materials. However, you may stray from the barcodes in the materials files. Should Henkel use your design, they will edit it for use on their packaging.
Each upload must contain a proposal for a single bar code. One upload spanning multiple categories, or including multiple barcodes, will be disqualified.
Be sure to indicate your barcode’s category in your title. You are encouraged to make many single category entries.

In the downloadable materials file, you'll find everything you need to get started.
The materials file includes:
